Happy Birthday, Samson!

Our boy turned 3 last month and we threw a party for him this past weekend. Sam and a bunch of his friends gathered in Sunset Park to make robot costumes (we provided supplies), run around acting crazy and eat robot cake (you may notice we had a theme this year).

The kids looked to be having a great time and part of the fun for me was seeing them off in a group chasing each other and making up their own games without the need for adult intervention. Our boy is growing up.

Another food-related post

Just to prove Sam likes to eat with gusto, he gave me a great photo op last night:

I seriously did not encourage this at all–it’s the natural aftermath of spaghetti.

Sam turned 3 today!  We will be celebrating this weekend as a family, then again next weekend with a party for him and his friends.  More on his birthday after we’ve actually celebrated, but for a quick present to start the day, Todd made Birthday Bacon, and Sam was thrilled (this is his fake smile, but he really was excited):

For those who heard the rumor:  I DID sprain my ankle last week and have a pretty big walking boot on.  I’m doing better and expect to be boot-free after tomorrow!  I spent about 4 hours being monitored and the baby is just fine–he’s giving me some nice kicks right now!

Sam’s eating habits

We occasionally forget what a “good eater” Sam is.  Last month we had brunch with friends and they were surprised that Sam finished his fruit before touching the french toast with syrup.  I didn’t think it was such a big deal, but as we were talking about it I realized how many people have expressed shock at his food choices–he loves raw red pepper, raw broccoli (we call it broccoli nuggets), avocado and really any veggie.  Many months ago he ate the raw onions off our burger before the french fries!

We don’t push food, only ask him to try a bite and make sure–I can’t remember which sister or sister-in-law taught me about this “no thank you bite”, but it works!  Inevitably, Sam tries something and likes it.  He still hasn’t developed the palate for Ethiopian food but he recently ate a mildly spicy curry off my plate and enjoyed it.

Of course, he still likes junk food and has started grabbing candy and Fruit Loops off the store shelves, but he’s also accepted sweets as occasional special treats.  Strangely enough, he DOESN’T like a lot of the typical kid foods like applesauce, mac and cheese, or jelly (PB sandwiches, neat, for this kid).

This isn’t the greatest picture, but you get the idea of Sam’s zeal for eating.

On related note, he’s having Salisbury steak for lunch at his new school tomorrow–it brought back memories just seeing that on the menu.

Brunners in Florida, reprise

We returned to Fort Lauderdale last weekend, staying just a block away from where we took our “babymoon” a couple months before Sam was born.

Once again, our days revolved around swimming (and generally enjoying warm weather), eating and sleeping, but this time we had the almost-3-year-old  am and baby #2 along for the ride.  It was a nice relaxing trip.

Sam Kerouac

We’ve talked before of Sam’s penchant for spontaneously writing his own songs. Lately, he’s moved on from the traditional verse-chorus-verse style (like in the following song about cutting down trees and wishing he could fly).

His new style involves reinterpreting the classics in the spoken word, rhythmic style of the beat poets. Check this out, daddio:

First Concert for #2 Son

Kate and I had a chance to go out on a date last week. We dropped by 4food and built our own burgers, then headed over to Radio City Music Hall to see TV On The Radio. It was a great show and we were pleasantly surprised to find ourselves surrounded by a number of other pregnant women. Hopefully, #2 Son found the music as infectious and enjoyable as his parents did.

Btw, we reached another milestone last night. I felt our new boy kick for the first time!

It’s a…?

As most of you know by now, we’ll be adding another member to our family this August. Kate is 20 weeks along and today was the ultrasound appointment where we officially found out the sex of the baby. Rather than let the doctor tell us, we decided to keep the secret until we could all find out together as a family. You can see the big reveal yourself in the video below:

We’re all very excited.

Sam’s accent

Sam has developed hints of a Brooklyn accent from his teachers at day care.  Our favorite is his pronunciation of mirror as “mira”.  His friend Mercer at school is “Mersa”.  He has some other strange pronunciations that might be the same source, but I don’t know…..like a hill is a “he-el”.  He also has the standard little kid mispronunciations like “lellow” instead of yellow but overall he’s speaking really clearly and we enjoy our conversations.

He’s also building important vocabulary words since we really often talk to him like he’s a much older kid.  Last night Todd was reading to him from a comic book and tried to explain what a force-field is–it cracked me up!

Random Sam

There’s a lot going on in our lives right now as we deal with selling our apartment and switching Sam to a new day care. Unfortunately, that means less time for posting on this blog. To fill the gap a bit, here are some random photos of the family from this past winter.

It Begins…

It was President’s Day on Monday which means we had a long weekend. Our original plan was to head out of town to someplace warm, but instead we decided to stay home (mostly due to flight costs) and kick potty training into high gear. Our plan was pretty simple: have Sam wear underwear instead of diapers and ask him to tell us when he had to use the bathroom. The first day started with a series of accidents that left Sam’s new underpants supply desperately low and Kate and I wondering whether we chose the right way to go about all this. But by the afternoon Sam was confidently telling us when he had to use the bathroom and we were soiled-underpants-free through the rest of the weekend (Save for one incident that occurred during a heated debate about what was for dinner).

Sam on the Potty!

We’ve still got a little ways to go until Sam is completely diaper free, but he’s done a great job so far.
