Sam Prefers Mom

Sam has started to hug and even cuddle a bit (and sort of kiss, but it’s usually a messy one), which is so adorable and endearing. He’s also started to prefer being with me much of the time. It’s great to be needed, but also a little tiresome when there are other perfectly capable, loving adults to play with (or change his diaper). Todd perserveres.  Fortunately, Todd always has silly noises or little games to divert Sam’s attention.

This is especially exhausting at night, when Sam has a one-track mind and his attention cannot be diverted.  That second tooth still hasn’t poked through so for now we’re attributing the nighttime problems to teething.  It looks like we might have “sleep training” in our future if things don’t turn around.

Teeth!

Sam’s first tooth finally emerged and he has the second one right next to it following close behind. He’s pretty shy about showing them off but they’ll start showing up in pictures as they get bigger.

A related curiousity:  the peditrician tells me that kids who sprout teeth on the late end of the spectrum also tend to have growth spurts later in adolescence.

Nursing

I always had a goal of nursing Sam for a year.  That’s what American Academy of Pediatrics and other reputable groups recommend and it’s a nice round number.  Pumping at work has sometimes been difficult and stressful, but I’ve kept at it.  We use formula here and there to fill in the gaps, but I’ve worked hard to keep up with Sam’s diet.  He’s eating more and more solid food so the weaning has begun, but I don’t have plans to quit completely in immediate future.  I have continued to breastfeed for Sam’s benefit, but a recent NY Times article reminds about all the benefits to me!

It turns out, I could be lowering my risk for developing high blood pressure, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, heart attack, stroke, hypertension, osteoporosis, breast cancer and ovarian cancer….that’s a staggering list!  Plus, I’m more conscious of eating healthy well-balanced meals.

Sam vs Grass

Sam vs Grass

Sam vs Grass

The picture kind of says it all. It was a beautiful day in Brooklyn yesterday so we decided to walk over to Prospect Park and let Sam run around barefoot in the grass. Turns out grass kind of freaks him out. Still his desire to run around eventually overwhelmed his repulsion and Sam was soon lumbering around like a champ.

It’s always fun to see the streets bursting with pedestrians on the first warm days of the year. Everyone wants to be outside and you can almost hear the sidewalks creaking under the weight of all that humanity. The park was jam packed, but we were still able to find a comfortable spot to hang out. We climbed around on a miniature playground built for babies, played some ball, ran into some friends, and even scored some Thai food on the way home (a luxury when you live in a neighborhood of Mexican restaurants). All in all it was a good day and a reminder of why we enjoy living in Brooklyn in the first place. Click on the picture above for a look at some more photos from our adventures.

How Sam eats Cheerios

One of Sam’s favorite things to eat until recently has been Cheerios (actually, a more natural knock-off with less sugar). I say “until recently” because he just discovered that instead of eating them it’s more fun to launch them off the high chair with his finger. Thanks to the distance he’s able to achieve with this technique and the small size of our apartment you now never know just where you’ll stumble upon a Cheerio walking around our place. Here’s a look:

Also, completely unrelated to Cheerios, here’s a look at Sam playing with his new Squishy Fish book (courtesy of Grandma and Grandpa Brunner):

A visit from Shawn

This past weekend my old friend, Shawn Brick, came to visit. I’m lucky enough to not only still be friends with a bunch of people I met in 8th grade, but to also live only a few blocks from two of them. Since Shawn was also a part of this 8th grade troop, having him in town was an excuse for us all to get together and talk about the good old days: hanging out at Valley Fair mall, playing Nintendo while listening to Bon Jovi, watching Thundercats, getting our head slammed into our locker door by a freakishly huge girl from our homeroom class… good times. Growing up, I moved a lot and was always a bit jealous of my high school friends who had known each other since grade school and here I am still hanging around with my high school friends 20 years later. On the one hand, I think that’s really cool. On the other hand, seeing the phrase “20 years” typed out makes me feel really old…

Here are a few photos from the weekend, as well as a hilarious shot of Sam in the bath. That boy has one crazy body shape.

Finally, here a short video of Sam practicing his walking (and getting angry at his mom for taking away the nail clippers):

Cruising

Sam is still pretty wobbly on his feet, but he’s started to cruise.  Who needs crawling?!

I think it’s pretty amusing how he scrapes his belly along the couch to keep balance.

Rejection

Todd and I have both gone through a little rejection from Sam here and there as he has learned to voice his opinion (screeching, arching his back, pushing away, etc.). Today I took quite a blow when I went to pick him up from the babysitter. I knew this day would come eventually: he didn’t want to leave with me. He was very unhappy when I took him from her arms, and spent the next couple minutes screaming and diving at her while I tried to divert his attention. She finally went in the other room so I could finish getting him in the stroller and make a run for it. I’m glad he likes the nanny, but it was heartbreaking.
