We started our childbirth education classes last Thursday. The first class was more of an introduction of the ideas that will follow, and I’m already feeling a little more confident just being aware of the preparation we will be getting. This class also involved a lot of sharing with the other 5 couples – the details on due date, birth location (hospital, birthing center, home), Ob/midwife, plans and expectations for medical interventions, and our excitements and fears. It wasn’t quite like therapy, but it felt good to talk to others in the same situation, especially since all the mothers had the same excitements and fears (as did the partners, Todd tells me–we split up for that part). The instructor seems very intelligent, well organized and confident–she’s been a doula for a long time and just had a baby about 2 months ago, so it seems like her experience will be valuable, too. In case you’re interested in more information, their website is http://www.birthdaypresence.net/
The baby is growing fast now so the birth is feeling more imminent. Todd and I are busy with the preparations–reading up on the theories and medical evidence for natural childbirth, researching day care and pediatricians, and of course a little shopping to physically prepare our home.
